How to Clean Different Types of Leather Jackets

A leather jacket never goes out of style no matter what type of leather jacket you own. To keep your jacket in new condition you have to take care of it, you just cannot put it in the washing machine like other clothes because it shrinks and cracks it. If your jacket looks dull or dirty you have to try some fast and easy ways to clean it. These ways can clean any type of jacket including a custom leather jacket.

Using Soap and Water

Mix Up a Mild Soap Solution
Add two teaspoons of liquid dish detergent in few ounces of warm water into a large, open container. Too much of detergent can weaken the leather and strip of dyes and can result in blotchy and discolored appearance.

Wet a Soft towel or Sponge
Thoroughly dip sponge or towel in a soapy solution. Just wet your towel or sponge, it should not be sopping wet. If your towel or sponge is too wet it will do more damage by saturating leather.  Also, remember to use soft cloth; rough fabric may leave scratches on the soft leather.

Wipe Down the Outside of the Jacket
Clean outside of your jacket with damp towel or sponge in long and smooth motion rather than scrubbing it forcefully. Clean the entire jacket, in the same manner, paying extra attention to discolored patches, water spots or places where oil and dirt have built.

Clean off the Soap and Pat the Jacket Dry
Using clean damp towel or sponge wipe your jacket again to clear away soap residue. With dry towel pat the jacket until its completely dry making sure there no standing water remaining. Direct heat is very bad for your jacket don’t use a blow dryer. To dry it completely hangs it in the closet.

Specialty leather cleaner contains ingredients that can scrub away stains and dirt and which also help in keeping leather soft and healthy.

Apply Cleaner to Jacket
Spray a coin-sized glob of cleaning solution onto the dirty par of jacket. A leather cleaner comes in gels, sprays or bars. Always use a minimal amount of cleaner when cleaning for the first time.

Rub Solution into the Leather
Massage the leather cleaner into the surface of the jacket with a soft clean towel. Clean in slow circular motion working your way out in a spiral. It will collect dirt and remove water strokes. Rub until cleaner has been absorbed into your jacket.

Remove Excess Solution
If any of the cleaners remains on a surface of jacket clean it with a separate towel. When you are finished your jacket will look new and leather will be protected and moisture.
